Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hunting or fishing exchange?

A hunting or fishing exchange is when you trade fishing or hunting excursion with another member. For example, you take your partner trout fishing and they take you turkey hunting.

What is hosted and un-hosted?

A hosted exchange is when you invite your exchange partner to fish or hunt your land and/or public land when you're present. An un-hosted exchange is when you give your exchange partner access to your property without you being readily available to them. The same goes for fishing expeditions.

Is it safe?

Don't worry about meeting strangers who share your same interest. When you're comfortable, exchange emails, talk on the phone, share some photos of your most recent sportsman successes, and swap stories. By the time you trade excursions you won't be strangers anymore.

How can I make my exchange the best it can be?

Communication is key.

Good communication will minimize misplaced expectations. Ask questions about the area or what type of gear you'll need for the region you're visiting.

Be sure to understand whether your exchange partner will be taking you out fishing or hunting or you will be on your own during your visit. Ask as many questions as you can.

How much does it cost?

A one year unlimited membership will cost $39.95. This is an introductory price and will be going up in the near future. This makes Outdoorsman Exchange the most affordable way to try different types of fishing or hunting adventures. Make as many exchanges as you want with no other charges!

Who would want to hunt or fish in my area?

If you have many acres or a waterfront cabin in Colorado, Alaska, or Canada you're more than likely going to be getting a lot of exchange inquiries. But keep in mind that people also have interests in seeing new places and having new hunting or fishing experiences with others that share their same interests.

You might find that some members might simply enjoy sharing and watching you have your first experience with an elk hunt or some type of fishing excursion.

I'm an avid hunter/fisherman but live in a city. Who would want to exchange with me?

If you don't have your own private land to offer, you're probably familiar with public land or have family or friends with land. Just be sure that you're familiar with the area and know where you can take your exchange partner for the best chance of a successful hunt.

Keep in mind that your exchange partner could be interested in something else you'd have to trade. You might be surprised at the response you get.

Do I share my accommodations?

Yes, but only if you're comfortable. If you've made the decision to exchange excursions and have communicated with several e-mails, phone conversations, photos, and stories, you'll know if you're comfortable.

You may also select an option to provide lodging, or not provide lodging when you create your exchange.

How much do I save?

Have you checked into guided outdoor services? If you have, than you know that they can cost thousands of dollars. A guided elk hunt can run $4,000, a bear hunt $800 or more. Do we say more?

What about insurance and liability?

Check with your own insurance company, but for the most part we understand that most insurance covers exchange partners as invited guests.

What are some of the benefits of an exchange?

Go on new hunting or fishing opportunities that you've always wanted to try but could not afford. Save thousands of dollars as compared to going with a guided outfitter. Possibly save on lodging expenses, depending what you and your exchange partner work out.

Enjoy a new adventure with someone who has experience with the sport you're trying. Gain memories and stories to tell for a lifetime. Your exchange partner will be familiar with the area and could have the scouting done for you. Make new friendships.
